Discover the Magic of Vis
Vis, Croatia, is an island that time seems to have forgotten. This secluded gem, once a closed military base, offers a unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and a laid-back atmosphere that sets it apart from its more crowded Croatian counterparts.
Things to Do on Vis Island
Explore Stiniva Beach: This iconic crescent-shaped cove is a must-visit. Accessible by boat or foot, but be prepared for a steep hike down, then back up from Marine zemlje to the beach. But it's worth the journey for its crystal-clear waters and dramatic cliffs. (https://stinivavis.com/)
Discover the Blue Cave: A boat trip to the Blue Cave is a highlight of any visit to Vis. The magical blue light reflecting on the water is truly breathtaking. Go there with a local tour provider or with a local from island. If you find a local from island, with "island card", your waiting time to see Blue Cave could be significally shorter.
Wine Tasting: Vis is renowned for its excellent wines, particularly the Plavac Mali red, Bugava - white, etc. Indulge in a tasting tour and savor the local flavors. There are many excellent wineries on the island. Be sure to visit them and pick your favourite. My favourite spots for wine are: https://www.rokis.hr/en/
Unwind in Komiža: This charming fishing village offers a relaxed atmosphere, delicious seafood, and stunning sunsets. Amazing choice of good places to eat, drink.
Hike Mount Hum: For breathtaking panoramic views, hike to the highest point on the island, Mount Hum. See the sunset there overviewing Komiža at old chapel. Amazing view.
Visit Tito's Cave: Step back in time and explore the hidden cave where the former Yugoslav leader Tito once resided.
Do an Army Tour: Either go on an Army tour with local tour provider, or you can do it also by yourself. See below for exact map spots.
Fort George: Stop in this amazing place. Fort George offers great food, drinks and music on Vis island. From this amazing heritage fortress, you'll get some of the best view of the island.
Visit Kraljičina špilja cave: You can do it yourself or maybe not a bad idea, to do it with local who knows the terrain. Bring the flashlight ! (Cave Kraljičina Špilja:
Island Hopping: Take a boat trip to the nearby islands of Biševo (home to the Blue Cave) and uninhabited island Ravnik (home to the Green Cave), then go to Budikovac on some drinks and crystal clear waters.
Relax on the Beaches: Vis boasts numerous hidden coves and secluded beaches perfect for sunbathing and swimming.
Tips for Your Vis Adventure
Best Time to Visit: The peak season is July and August, but for a quieter experience, consider visiting in April, May, June, or September and October. Crowds are less and the real magic of this island is happening in those months.
Getting There: Ferries depart from Split to Vis, journey takes 2 hours and 15 minutes with Petar Hektorovič ferry, and less with catamaran ferry. Booking in advance is recommended. (https://www.jadrolinija.hr/en/search-buy-ticket)
Accommodation: While Vis has a limited number of hotels, there are plenty of apartments and villas available for rent. Use Booking.com or Airbnb.com, or get into Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/644044355797202) for island Vis and ask directly to the locals about availability.
Transportation: Renting a scooter or car is a convenient way to explore the island, but be prepared for winding roads. If you come with your own vehicle, you can go everywhere yourself. (just drive carefuly and enjoy the island. And don't forget to stop when you see something you like)
Local Cuisine: Don't miss the opportunity to try fresh seafood, especially grilled octopus and fish, and a must is to try Peka, also called ispod peke, which is a traditional Croatian dish from the Dalmatia region. It consists of chicken, lamb, veal, or octopus as the main ingredient, with potatoes and vegetables cooked under a clay or iron lid, in an open fireplace. Best peka on island ?
